For those surprised to see snow after the rain...
Rain starts as snow in the cloud and melts in warmer layers close to the surface.
With time, the rain brings the freezing level down allowing the flakes not to melt anymore.
Basically, the heavier and persistent the rain, the higher the chance of snow in these situations, away from the sea where lowers layers are too warm.
